Cinderella Man

Man.
This is a hard movie to review. And, aggravatingly enough, my hero Roger Ebert has let me down: he has apparently been taken in completely by the schmaltz of this movie. He is getting soft in his old age! There’s no criticism of the film for turning a good guy into a horrible trash-talking bad guy! He doesn’t take Howard to task for pushing the violins and including such incredibly sappy dialog as “you’re the champion of my heart.” Ebert’s just all “ooh, Crowe played a nice guy! Wow!”
Feh.
I didn’t hate Cinderella Man, but I didn’t think it was terriffic either. I enjoyed it but found the melodrama a little over the top. But it’s hard to explain that clearly in a brief review.
