Mossad Exodus

By Gad Shimron

Got this book through the Librarything Early Bird Reviewer program, and am so glad I was picked! This is one heck of a story. It's a first person account of the rescue of refugee Ethiopian Jews by Mossad, Israel's secret service. I had no idea there even were Ethiopian Jews! Shimron was one of the major players in the operation and tells a good story. It's a bit stiffly written, though that may be because it was written in Hebrew and translated -- and anyway, I didn't mind. I was too busy enjoying this real-life spy story. Good stuff!

My Life with the Spirits

by Lon Milo Duquette

Whatever your take on ceremonial magic is, this account of Duquette's adventures in magic and life in general is a hoot and a half. He has a wonderful sense of humor and is an excellent storyteller. I highly recommend this book!

Book 11 in 2007.

Hypocrite in a Poufy White Dress

By Susan Gilman

This book is wonderful.

It's a coming-of-age memoir, taking Susan from her childhood in a rough neighborhood where she and her brother got the crap beat out of them regularly to Switzerland where she and her husband moved for a couple years for his job. It's laugh-out-loud funny in spots, incredibly poignant in spots, and it's almost impossible for me to talk about it without lapsing into terrible cliches (as you've seen here).

However.

The cover has a picture of a little girl dressed like a fairy princess except for big, ugly combat boots, and that really sums up the book, in my opinion. You can probably tell from the cover if you will like it or not, and that's a good thing.
