Sigh.

Naamah pretty much sums it up. The Supreme Court thinks they know more about medicine than doctors and us dumb womenfolk.

Grrrr.

Edited to add: this is an eloquent post inspired by Naamah's. It's about abortion, written by a woman who is in the early stages of labor. Powerful stuff.

FWIW (and it isn't much), only 55.5% of the Court thinks this. Justice Ginsburg did a fine job in her dissent of explaining what's wrong with the majority opinion.

But if you really want your head to explode, consider this: the Court didn't actually decide it knew more than you or the AMA. It decided that Congress does.

From what I found Trisomy is a fancy word for downs syndrome. Ancephaly seems certain. But don't you think the idea of aborting a child simply because s/he's not perfect is pretty superficial and immature? Genetic issues aside; it's like saying "if my son isn't exactly how i want him to be i can kill him".

Or if something tragic happens to him later and life and he is crippled that we can just kill her/him.

Of course this excludes cases where fetus harms mother and will cause death cases.

But if you look down the road there's nothing to say that your child will be alright. It's a matter of faith that grows as you raise him/her.

Me and Jen had this discussion, and that's the conclusion we came to.

I'm not telling anyone what to think or do, just dropping something to think about.

Well, as long as we're just dropping things to think about, think about this:

The law that was upheld didn't say "you can't kill your fetus," it said "you can't kill your fetus THIS WAY." You're still perfectly free (for now) to perform a late-term abortion via other means, such as chemical termination then removal, or in utero termination.

Thing is, if your doctor thinks that this method is the safest for you, you don't get that choice because some marketing genius realized that if they put the word "birth" in the label, they could get Congress to vote against it.

So bottom line, we're not even arguably saving fetuses (fetii?), we're ONLY restricting women's choices.

Keith - Alex is right, this only bans a particular form of late-term abortion.

Basically, late-term abortions where the doctor removes the fetus intact are banned. Abortions where the fetus is dismembered inside the woman are the only ones still permissible.

What's even more messed up is that it's not clear whether procedures to remove an already deceased fetus intact are permitted under the law. So if the fetus dies of natural causes, it may now be illegal to remove it unless you dismember it first.

As a side note, if we banned all things that folks think are "superficial and immature" a lot of stuff you and I like would be illegal.
