Miscellany

A handful of things:

- the panel I mentioned got canceled due to lack of attendance. Sigh. My 15 minutes of fame, deleted! Woe is me.

- Mistress Matisse on words and the GOP campaign. Beautiful.

- If I see one more person equate dislike of Sarah Palin with sexism, I may punch somebody. If she were a man who held the same positions I'd hold him in just as much contempt, so it's not sexism that makes me dislike her. It's principle. I don't like people of any gender who tout the ideas she does. She loses extra points for her abuse of the English language (see Matisse's piece above) -- which also has nothing to do with her gender.

- I got the final dose of my rabies vaccine last week and will be handling bats this weekend for the first time! I'll also be getting the equipment and some basic training so I can be on call to pick up injured bats. WOO HOO!

I heard Palin's nucelar too, but being European and used to Americans spelling words wrong, I would not call her an idiot for that. I in fact have Obama supporting faculty here on my workplace who pronounce it the same way. I would also like to know how Matisse pronounces Aluminium because I have not heard it spelled or written correctly by any American. The name is A-l-u-m-i-n-i-um and not aluminum. Now does this make a nation to idiots? Probably not. Nuernberg is Nuernberg and not Nuremberg. Muenchen is Muenchen and I had to change it to Munich in my blogname as none of you Americans recognize Muenchen as the correct writing and spelling of the city in Germany I refer to. New York stays New York and I would not even dare to write or spell it Neu Jork to tweek it into my language. Only arrogant Americans do that and we Europeans roll our eyes but are tolerant enough to not call them idiots. I call an idiot somebody who is too elitist and cocky about their own spelling to allow others to talk different.

You'll notice that I say she loses extra points for abusing the English language in general. Not just the nuclear/"nucular" issue. "Verbage" is not a word, for example -- and "verbiage," which is probably what she was trying to say, doesn't fit in the sentence -- unless she was trying to insult McCain.

Americanized spelling is not necessarily incorrect. Do you consider Japanese pronunciation and spelling of English words to be "wrong"? If you were writing in German and wrote New York as Neu Jork, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Finally: don't expect to be able to come here and insult me on my own pages. Keep it in your own blog. Next time you do it, I will delete your comment.
