Still chugging along
Wordcount: 6,739
I'm still on track with my wordcount, which is nice. I'm also having a good time, which is important. It helps that things are quiet at work, so it's easy to clear my mind on my lunch break. Now if only I could keep from getting distracted by the internet. It takes a lot of discipline to avoid taking breaks from writing by looking at web pages. Oy.
"What about familiars?""Ah, I was getting to that. Familiars aid us in drawing energy from our surroundings. They help to ground us and provide backup in case of an emergency."
"Do you have a familiar?"
"I do indeed, and he is in my room. Wait here." She went into her quarters and brought out a largish-lump. Evran stared.
"That's a tortoise!"
"Well, yes. What were you expecting, exactly?"
"I don't know... something supernatural. A cat or a raven or something along those lines."
"Any creature with the right mentality and temperament can be a familiar, Evran. T'lach here is perfect for me because he is slow, patient, and, of course, tortoises live a long, long time. Because of his close work with me, he is likely to live significantly longer than a normal tortoise would. That's important, of course, because the bond between a familiar and a sorcerer is so strong that the death of either is a great psychic blow to the other."
"Of course. So if you had chosen something short-lived, you would have to go through that shock more frequently."
"Yes. Whereas with T'lach, I don't have to worry about it for another hundred or two hundred years. He has been with me since the beginning, and while he's getting slower he's still quite perky." The tortoise's bullet head swung around to look at her with what Evran could have sworn was amusement.
