Io Triumphe

Oh, my dear Alma Mater. I sure do miss Occidental College and never more so than when I get the call from those poor students manning the phone banks to ask alumni like me for money.
I was very sad tonight to have to tell poor David that I couldn’t contribute to the Alumni fund as I am stony cold broke. He was cool about it, though, and we shot the breeze for a while. I love that I can chat with the kids who call me and get nostalgic. I never manned the phone banks myself when I was at Oxy but my friends who did said it was kind of cool.
He asked me if I was going to go into teaching, and when I said no, journalism, he said he had done some writing for the school paper! That was cool. He’s a Senior now so he would have been like a frosh or something when I graduated. I should have asked what department he’s in, maybe I met him. Ah, well.

Bright college days, oh, carefree days that fly,
To thee we sing with our glasses raised on high.
Let’s drink a toast as each of us recalls
Ivy-covered professors in ivy-covered halls.

Soon we’ll be out amid the cold world’s strife.
Soon we’ll be sliding down the razor blade of life.
But as we go our sordid sep’rate ways,
We shall ne’er forget thee, thou golden college days.
